Frequently asked questions
Do I need to create an account?
No. SpendTally has no account system. The app starts working the moment you open it. There is no email, no password, no sign-in.
Where is my data stored?
On your iPhone, in a local SwiftData store inside the app's sandbox. It does not leave your device, except in your iCloud Backup if you have that turned on (see the Privacy Policy, §4.1). To turn off iCloud Backup for SpendTally specifically: iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Backups → [your device] → Show All Apps → SpendTally → toggle off.
How do I back up my data?
Two ways: (1) Use the in-app export to save a JSON file to a location you choose — Files, AirDrop, iCloud Drive, etc. (2) Leave iCloud Backup on and your iPhone will back up the app's data automatically. Both are your data, controlled by you.
How do I delete my data?
Open the app and go to Settings → Clear All Data. This wipes the local SwiftData store. If you have iCloud Backup on, you can also exclude the app from future backups (see above) and then delete the existing backup to remove historical copies.
Will the app ever ask me to subscribe or pay?
No. SpendTally is free, with no in-app purchases, no premium tier, and no "unlock" paywall. The whole app is on the screen you see when you open it.
Why is the yearly number so much higher than I expected?
That's the point of the app. Most of us mentally price things monthly or per-purchase — $5 for a coffee, $15 for a streaming service, $185 for a gym. SpendTally multiplies those by the number of times they happen in a year so you can see the real cost. If the number feels painful, the app has done its job.
Can I add a one-time cost, not a recurring one?
Yes. When you add a cost, choose One-time in the spending-timing section. You can also pick a Fixed date for known future expenses.
Does it support multiple currencies?
Yes. You can change the display currency in Settings → Income & Currency. Income is entered in the chosen currency; all calculations use that currency.
Can I share my yearly reality with a friend?
Yes. Open any cost, tap the share icon, and a 5:7 shareable card is saved to Photos. The card shows the cost name, yearly total, share of your income, and the 5-year total. You then share the saved photo through any app you like — Messages, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. SpendTally itself never receives the share.
Does the app work offline?
Yes — fully. SpendTally never touches the internet. Airplane mode, no Wi-Fi, no cellular: the app still works.
Does it work on iPad?
Not yet. SpendTally is iPhone-only for now. A universal build is on the roadmap.
Does it work on Mac (Apple Silicon)?
Not directly, but you can run the iPhone app on a Mac with Apple Silicon through "iPhone apps on Mac" if your Mac runs macOS Sonoma or later. Full Mac support is on the roadmap.
Can I import costs from my bank or another finance app?
Not yet. SpendTally is intentionally not a transaction aggregator — there is no bank connection. You add your named costs manually, which is also what makes the yearly forecast feel real. An import feature (CSV) is on the roadmap.
How do I report a bug?
Email oveshdev@gmail.com with the subject "SpendTally bug report". Include your iOS version, iPhone model, app version (Settings → About), and a screenshot if possible. The developer replies to every bug report personally.
How do I request a feature?
Email oveshdev@gmail.com with the subject "SpendTally feature request". Short, concrete requests get the best response. "Make it do X" is more useful than "make it better".
Can I see what's coming next?
The roadmap is informal and lives in the developer's head. Major themes for the next 90 days: iPad support, CSV import, multiple goals, and widget support. No public roadmap board at the moment.
System status
SpendTally is a local-only app with no backend, so there is no service status to report. If you can open the app and your data is there, the app is working. If something is broken on your device specifically, the bug report above is the fastest path to a fix.
Response time
Support is one person reading email. Typical response time is 24–72 hours, faster on weekdays. If your issue is preventing you from using the app, mark the subject URGENT.
